This publication brings together Nicholson Baker's The Mezzanine and Georges Perec's Species of Spaces, two texts that share a close attention to the overlooked: the routines, surfaces, and structures that make up everyday life. Rather than presenting the two voices separately, the design lets Perec's observations run beneath Baker's, emerging through marginalia, shifts in type, and the rhythm of the page.
The design uses three typefaces to map these voices: a serif for The Mezzanine, a sans serif for Species of Spaces, and a monospace for the lists and inventories that run through both texts. Rather than presenting the two voices separately, the design lets them accumulate alongside each other, the typefaces marking where one ends and the other begins. The book treats design itself as a form of interpretation, where the choice of typeface, the use of space, and the relationship between texts all shape how the work is read and felt.
